The room

NUMMI was a GM plant in Fremont, California, famous for conflict and poor quality. Toyota took the same building and, largely, the same people. The product on the line did not get a new slogan. The work did.

The tension

When delivery is slow, companies hire more people, buy more tools, or write more process. The queue is invisible, so the hero who jumps it gets promoted. Waste becomes culture. Everyone is busy. Nothing flows.

The move

Toyota’s system made problems visible: stop the line, see the work, fix the cause, respect the people doing it. The HBS case is brutal about how hard that is to copy. The point is not posters about kaizen. It is an operating system that treats defects as information.

What happened

The same workforce produced dramatically better output. The lesson for product organizations is uncomfortable: your backlog, your handoffs, your ‘alignment meetings’ are the line. Optimization starts with seeing them.
